Clinics are right around the corner so lets talk about what happens if there is bad weather. Clinics will not be held in these conditions

  1. Lightning

  2. Severe Thunderstorms

  3. High winds or Hail

If there is a notice of a severe storm with any of the listed conditions above we will be forced to cancel those evening clinics.

How will I be notified? A notice will be sent to you via sms and/or email. Social media is to be updated, as well as blogged. It is your responsibility to check the weather and assess any safety concerns you have with your exhibitor. We will do our best to announce the cancellation ASAP- since we have people traveling from near and far notification will go out by 5pm the night of practice.

Thunder Storms and Lightning Safety

Having a plan and a safe place to shelter in the event of lightning is an important step in risk management. It is recommended that outdoor events be suspended or moved indoors if a storm is less than six miles away (including mounting and warm-ups).

  • If there is lightning, severe storms, or if the key leader feels that riding in both indoor or outdoor unsafe. We will end clinics immediately, and dismiss all exhibitors.

  • If there is severe weather alerts prior and the forcast shows the weather may continually be bad, practice will be canceled.

  • If there is servere weather that pops up and we need to take shelter, we ask that horses be secured in the stalls and that you seek shelter immediately.

Want to know more on how to determine the distance of a storm in miles?

Use the Flash-to-Bang Method by counting the number of seconds between seeing lightning and hearing thunder and dividing it by Wive (lightingsafety.noaa.gov).

Coggins-

A “Coggins” is a blood test that detects antibodies to the disease Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA). This is a virus that can cause affected horses (or donkeys) to have fevers, anemia (low red blood cell count), edema (stocking up), or weight loss/muscle wasting. Some horses recover quickly from the symptoms, which may be nothing more than a fever for <24 hours. EIA is a relative of the virus that causes HIV in humans. Horses that become infected will carry the disease for life. These carriers often show no signs of disease and appear healthy. Carriers then serve as a source of disease transmission to other horses.

EIA is transmitted by flies (horse flies and deer flies), so your horse doesn’t actually have to come into contact with an infected or carrier horse to catch the virus. Flies come to your farm, so your horse is at risk even if he never travels, or lives in a closed herd. There is no vaccine for EIA and there is no treatment.

**If your horse enters a trailer make sure to have a copy of this negative test on hand, incase you get asked for proof.**

Premise ID-

What is it?!

Premises registration (ID) allows for much faster traces when there is an outbreak of an animal disease or an animal-borne human disease. Registering your premises is mandatory in Wisconsin, but there is no cost associated. When any livestock or animals live on your property it is requested that you fill out this form. As stated above it helps track outbreaks, as well as who needs to be notified in case of this.
